What is ORCID?

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a non-profit organization that provides a persistent and unique digital identifier for researchers.

The ORCID ID is a 16-digit alphanumeric code that distinguishes individual researchers from one another and links them to their scholarly works. ORCIDs are portable and will be associated with researchers throughout their careers, regardless of employer.

Why is ORCID useful?

1. Uniqueness and Name Disambiguation

There might be multiple researchers with similar names, leading to confusion and misattribution of their work. ORCID solves this problem by assigning a distinct identifier to each researcher and ensuring accurate credit for their contributions.

2. Centralized researcher profile

ORCID provides a centralized hub where researchers can manage their professional information, including affiliations, publications, grants, and more. This profile acts as a comprehensive, up-to-date CV, making it easier to showcase achievements. For individuals interested in the work of researchers, it is easier to access specific works.

This integration allows for automatic updates of researchers’ profiles whenever new works are published or affiliations change, reducing the need for manual data entry and ensuring accuracy.
